In an ancient garden

May 21 – August 8, 2011 Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery, Bedford, NS

Please come and help us celebrate the opening of our exhibition: May 21, 2-5 pm.

Guest Curator Gloria Hickey will give a short talk about the exhibition.

There is a relation between potting and gardening – human hands working with mud, mind’s eye visualizing outcomes. We love looking at ancient pottery forms, motifs and glazes. We also love mixing them up with our local Canadian flora and fauna. The garden can be a refuge, sheltered and protected, as can an art gallery. From a larger perspective, our blue planet, once an earthly paradise, is more and more in peril, often unprotected and disrespected.

These pots and installations are in a small way our attempt to honour the beauty of our natural world and the pleasure we take in it, as well as to pay respect to the great lineage of potters throughout the history of the world. A ceramic pot will easily last a thousand years. It is our wish that the children of our children’s children will find a garden to delight in, and not view these images as representations of some mythical creatures.
